Hello all, I know it's been an extremely long time since I've released a SubspaceLink newsletter and I deeply apologize for that. Life in the last few months has kept me away from this newsletter but not away from the sublink itself.
As some of you may know, I've made some visual changes to the SubspaceLink, namely the fact that I have removed all the frames. This allows me the ability to incorporate some great member-only features right into the main site itself shortly, working on the cookie system now, after which I will again give a go at the database.
Well, Enjoy.
The Return of Kes
Last week on Star Trek Voyager, Kes, the Ocampa with amazing powers, again makes an appearance on Voyager, this time however she's got herself a Bad attitude. The episode, "Fury" opens with a private birthday party for Tuvok by the Captain. They are then called to the bridge because they are receiving a distress call from a small ship. Both hurried to the bridge where they find out that there is one life sign on the ship, an Ocampa. Hailing them they find that it is Kes, welcoming her back the Captain invites her to join them on Voyager, instead of just docking however, angry, old Kes accelerates her ship and crashes into the side of Voyager. She then walks through deck 11 to main engineering, killing people and destroying bulkheads on the way, once in engineering, she kills Torres and places her hands on the warp core, moments later she vanishes into the past.
5 years earlier, a short 57 days after arriving in the Delta Quadrant, kes appears in main engineering, she quickly changes her appearance to match that of her younger self and goes around the ship, first to sickbay where she gets a hypospray and totally blows off the doctor, then to the Airponics bay to knock out her younger self, her intentions? To take the young Kes back to the Ocampa homeworld to change history, what she will do to achieve that goal? Anything, including, but not limited to, turning the crew of Voyager over to the Vidiians, a race who at this time was still harvesting body parts from other races to battle the effects of the Phage. Kes makes a deal, offering them tactical data enough to take over Voyager in return for safe passage for 2 to the Ocampa homeworld.
During the struggle, the crew is amazed at how much the Vidiians seem to know, too much, Kim discovers that a transmission is coming from the Airponics bay, and the Captain races there to find not one Kes but two. She quickly surmises that the one who is conscious is the one that she is fighting and soon discovers that this Kes is from the future, a fact she was already hinted to about because Tuvok had been having temporal premonitions that currently had him unconscious in sickbay.
After battling Kes for a while the Captain wins and Kes is dead on the floor. Captain Janeway is not content however to leave it at that (and for good reason) and decides to stop the events from ever taking place. She gets the young Kes to record a holographic message to herself and then finds out from Tuvok exactly what is to take place in that future state of Voyager.
Five years later, again the Captain is throwing a one-person birthday party for Tuvok and is called to the bridge, this time however when informed that the inhabitant of the vessel is Ocampa, she turns to Tuvok and says "I had almost forgotten", she then, before ever answering the hail evacuates deck 11 and completely shuts down the core, then lets Kes break in and blow up bulkheads in the empty hallway and enter Engineering to be greeted by... Herself.
The Holographic Kes pleads with old Kes to remember her roots and how much she loved Voyager. After that and a discussion with the Captain, (and this is where the report on startrek.com differs from what happened in the episode) old Kes sets off to return to the Ocampa in peace.
A great episode and it was good to see Kes again, although Jennifer Lien, the actress who plays Kes, has gained some weight since the first 3 seasons of Voyager.
Geppetto
Why even mention this non-Paramount, non Star Trek movie? Well, the Wonderful World of Disney Movie, Geppetto, stars not one but two of our favorite trek stars. Namely, Brent Spiner, everybody's favorite android as Stromboli the puppeteer who steals Pinocchio, and René Auberjonois, everybody's favorite Shape Shifter as "Buonragazzo, the flamboyant, crowd-pleasing inventor whose magnificent mechanical contraption produces "satisfaction guaranteed" perfect children for eager parents to take home".
The movie starred Drew Carey (with hair that looks kinda weird on him, guess because everyone is used to him with a buzz cut) as Geppetto, in the version of the beloved Disney classic Pinocchio focusing on Pinnocchio's Father.
Both Spiner and Auberjonois each have songs with long solos, including Bravo, Stromboli sung exclusively by Spiner, and Satisfaction Guaranteed led by Auberjonois (with help from many others)
Spiner also sang in a couple of other songs and had voice parts throughout the entire movie. All in all, it was a great live action rendition of one of Disney's greatest animated classics (which btw included one song from the old classic I've Got No Strings as well as an instrumental version of another (When You Wish Upon a Star).), only thing I must say is that Carey is not exactly the most beautiful singer in the world and he sang almost every song (This is an excellent example of just what I mean).
Anyway, if you missed, it, consider buying it from disney.com Here
The doc packs for a "family reunion"
Coming this week on Star Trek: Voyager, The EMH gets in a little family reunion as he meets his creator, Dr. Lewis Zimmerman. Zimmerman, who looks exactly like the Doc, is ill and Barclay and Troi facilitate the transmission of the EMH back to the Alpha quadrant to save Zimmerman's life.
Don't miss it, I can't wait to see another Troi and Barclay episode.
Uncritiqued Episodes
Well since I haven't sent out a newsletter in a while there are a lot of uncritiqued episodes, I have a list of them and will week by week after this issue sparce them in with the rest of the articles in this newsletter.
Well, good talking to you all again, once again I'm sorry for the long time since the last newsletter.
