Well the time has come for the season finale of Star Trek Voyager, and this time Paramount is following in the footsteps of its predecessor, Star Trek: The Next Generation. Yes, as you can see from the picture on the left Captain Janeway has been assimilated as of the End of Voyager's 6th Season. But I'm getting ahead of myself, on what the episode was about (that's obviously what you want to know about).
The Episode begins in a forest, Seven is walking along watching the people talk, and occasionally noticing one vanish here and there when someone comes up to her calling out her Human name "Annika". She, who does not recognize him, is frightened and then suddenly awakens in her Borg Alcove, having never experienced a dream before, she immediately runs to the Doctor for his professional help who explains the concepts of "dreams" to her and how it's not something that needs to be repaired. He gives her a device that will monitor her REM cycles and she "goes back to bed". Once again Seven finds herself in the forest where she again meets the man who called her by her human name and introduces himself as Axum. Axum informs Seven that it's not a dream, but instead a place known as Unimatrix Zero.
Apparently, there is a mutation that affects 1 out of every million drones that causes them to return to a state of individuality when they are regenerating, unfortunately, they remember nothing of their individual lives after they leave this virtual reality world that they call Unimatrix Zero (In case you haven't figured it out and didn't know, the name of the episode is Unimatrix Zero). Every time they regenerate however they regain their memories and walk around talking to each other in VR. In case this hasn't gotten totally confusing yet, Seven finds that the reason she is there is because they need her help. Apparently, before she left the collective she too had the mutation and found herself in Unimatrix Zero often. Axum informs her that the collective has found a way to detect the mutation and is eliminating them left and right. Seven leaves and asks the crew to let her help, initially skeptical that the whole dilemma was made up by her brain in her first attempt at dreaming. When the doctor assures them that Seven never reached REM sleep, they are a little more receptive to the concept that this Unimatrix Zero might actually exist and that helping the people there might actually be the turning point in the battle against the Borg, but the Captain isn't sure yet, so with Tuvok's help, the Captain joins Seven in Unimatrix Zero through a "Bridging of Minds" which involves a double mind-meld. The Captain talks with Axum and tells him that she's decided to help him with his plan. Axum's friends had developed a virus that would make it impossible for the collective to detect who has the mutation. The Captain however has a "better idea", rather than just making it so that the collective cannot detect the members of Unimatrix Zero, Janeway intends to modify the virus to allow them to keep their individuality and memories outside of the unimatrix. As she is discussing this plan with Axum, the Borg Queen discovers a way to send her drones into Unimatrix Zero where they take out the people in vr battles, once one of them is killed inside the unimatrix he prematurely comes out of his regeneration cycle where the queen can have him irradicated in the real world as well. Anyway, Seven and the Captain end the regeneration cycle to escape where the efforts are stepped up. The Queen must have recognized the Captain and Seven inside the unimatrix and contacted Voyager with an unusual offer. She offered to send Voyager home in a transwarp conduit if the Captain will simply stay out of the business of the Borg and not meddle. As usual, the Captain can't stay out of anything and says so, to which the queen said "See you soon Harry", which as of yet we can't exactly understand what she meant by that. Anyway, Captain Janeway, Lieutenant Tuvok, and Lieutenant Torres went to a Borg ship to infect the interspacial plexus (the device that allows Borg cubes to communicate with each other), in the process all three are assimilated and the Delta Flyer was destroyed,
And as you might expect...
To be Continued.....
Next Season
Oh btw, in case you missed it, Paris was promoted back to the rank of Lieutenant (actually it's a black pip so it's Lieutenant Junior Grade), which is good seeing as we all felt the reasoning that he was demoted to Ensign was bulk.
A great episode, but if you haven't figured out my title for this article yet, well doesn't the ending of this, ending with a view of Janeway as a Borg, sounds a lot like another episode we know, perhaps something that has the phrase "The best of" in it, kind of a copout, but we all want to know just how the crew of Voyager is going to get their 3 friends out of this one. We'll just have to wait and see, oh how I hate cliffhangers. Well to the Best of Both Worlds, to the Best of TNG's Worlds, and the best of Unimatrix Zero, be a quick summer!
Sing a Little Song for Me
I'm going to start from now on to showcase a different item in each issue of the newsletter and slowly but surely revive the SubspaceLink shop. This issue's showcase is This One's From The Heart, a CD by James Darren (The Holographic, Vic Fontaine from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), the CD features every song that Darren sang as Fontaine, a great addition to any Star Trek fan's Music Library.
